Phillies sign Rheal Cormier for 3 years, $8.75 million

What are the Phillies doing? Cormier would make a decent lefty specialist - lefties have hit .232 with 2 home runs against him over the past 4 seasons. He's by no means a bad pitcher - are you listening, Jose Mesa? - but the Phillies are not in a position to fine tune their roster by signing decent middle relievers when there are so many major, and easily fixable, problems with the rest of the team. There isn't a team out there who couldn't use Cormier, but the Phillies are now spending over six million dollars a year on Jose Mesa and Cormier, when they could have gotten two minor-league free agent pitchers for almost nothing, plus a player like Luis Alicea to help fix their second base "situation". For a team like the Yankees or Braves that have the major players in place and some money to spend, this would be a defensible move, but for a team that is considered by some to be "small market" (despite playing in one of the largest cities in the country), this is certainly not the right move.
